It is said to have originated in 807 CE when Tokuiti enshrined the Bodhisattva Manjushri, and it was formerly known as Monjuji. During the Sengoku period, it received the reverence of Date Masamune. In the Edo period, it enjoyed the deep faith of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, who granted it the rank of Chunojo and a shuinjo (a letter of privilege) for the lands of the Monju Hall. In 1914 CE (Taisho 3), the Monju Hall was rebuilt based on a design by Ito Chuta.
