The shrine's origins trace back to 1631 CE (Kan'ei 8), when Matsura Takamasa, the lord of Hizen, enshrined the ancestral spirits of four ancestors on Reijunzan (Spiritual Camellia Mountain) within Hizen Castle. It received the reverence of successive feudal lords, and the construction and repair of shrine buildings were funded by the domain. In the Meiji era, the four shrines of Reijunzan, Shichiro, Otsu-miya, and Hachiman were merged. In 1880 CE (Meiji 13), the enshrined deities were transferred, and the shrine was renamed to its current name.
