It is believed to have been established around 593 CE (Suiko 1), when Shitennoji Temple was founded. Initially, it enshrined the ancestral deity of medicine as a guardian for a pharmacy and a hospital. Later, Emperor Chinto, the ancestor of the Tachibana clan, was also enshrined, and the shrine was renamed Chinto Tenno-sha. In 1872 CE (Meiji 5), it was designated as a village shrine, and in 1915 CE (Taisho 4), it was designated as a shrine receiving offerings of food and silk.
