In 1869 CE (Meiji 2), the decision to establish the shrine was made based on the tradition that Ii Naomasa and Ii Takakata were aided by the deity, at the petition of Ii Naokata, a descendant. In 1872 CE (Meiji 5), it was renamed Iitaniya Jingu, and in 1873 CE (Meiji 6), it was designated as a Kanpei Chūsha (a mid-ranking shrine under imperial patronage). It is one of the shrines dedicated to figures from the Southern Court who contributed to the Kenmu Restoration.
