Later, when Master Jichaku discovered a plaque of Hie-gu buried underground and reported it to the court, Emperor Ninmyo ordered that a branch deity from Hie-gu in Sakamoto, Omi Province, be co-enshrined, making it a site for imperial prayers. In 1871 (Meiji 4), the shrine was separated from Hinoyama Gokoku-ji temple due to the order separating Shinto and Buddhism, and it was designated as a prefectural shrine in 1916 (Taisho 5).
