During the Daihō era, the monk En no Gyoja arrived and enshrined the Eight Palace Deities and the Eight Great Dragon Kings together. In the early 16th century, Susano-o-no-Mikoto was invited from Imamiya Shrine in Kyoto, and Imamiya Shrine was established. The entire mountain was named Chōgaku-zan Imamiya-bo and flourished as a Shugendō (mountain asceticism) training ground. Due to the Meiji-era edict separating Shinto and Buddhism, the site was divided into Imamiya Shrine and the Imamiya-bo Kannon Hall. However, the sacred objects and historical lineage have been inherited by the current shrine.
