Originally established as a takato (sub-temple) of Kōkoku-ji, a Tendai sect temple founded by Date Tadamune, the second daimyo of the Sendai Domain, Sengaku-in also served as the head temple of Sendai Tōshō-gū. It was founded by Kōkai, who previously served as the abbot of Fudō-in in Edo. The temple held the highest status in the Sendai Domain, with its leadership also serving as the head of Chūson-ji in Hiraizumi. During the Meiji Restoration, the temple was separated from Sendai Tōshō-gū due to the Shinbutsu bunri (separation of Shinto and Buddhism) policy. Today, it houses the guardian Buddha statue and memorial tablets of past abbots.
