Legend states that the shrine was founded in the 14th year of Emperor Seimu's reign or the 25th year of Emperor Kinmei's reign. Recognized as the Ichinomiya of Harima Province, it has been rebuilt each time it was destroyed by fire under the protection of the Imperial Court, provincial governors, shugo (military governors), the Akamatsu clan, and neighboring feudal lords. During the Meiji period, it was elevated to the status of a Kokhei Chusha (National Shrine of Middle Rank), and it is currently designated as a Hyakken Jinja (Special Table Shrine) under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
