History

According to shrine tradition, the main hall was built in 673 CE (Tenmu 2) when rice harvested from this area was offered to the Imperial House. In the mid-Edo period, Amano Nobukage identified this site as the 'Inu Shrine' of Yamada District listed in the Engishiki (a 10th-century codex), which became the established theory. It has also been pointed out that Kuma-no Gongen (Kumano deities) and Inari may have been enshrined here in ancient times.
