According to tradition, the shrine's origins date back to the 7th year of Emperor Suinin's reign (13th emperor), when Takekuni-Karabe-no-Mikoto enshrined Amaterasu-Omikami while developing the Toyo region. Later, in the 2nd year of Tenpyo-Shin'gu (746 CE), it was granted the rank of Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade, and during the Jogan era, its rank was elevated to Third Rank. The shrine was destroyed by fire during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's conquest of Shikoku and relocated to Tosa Province, but it returned to its original site in the 11th year of Keicho (1606 CE).
