It was classified as a Meishin Taisha (Grand Shrine of the Famous Deity) under the Engi regulations. The shrine received patronage from Ashikaga Takauji and the Azai clan, but the shrine buildings and ancient records were destroyed by fire during the Battle of Shizugatake.
