Founded in 1247 CE (Hoji 1) by the regent Hojo Tokiyori, the temple is said to have hosted a sermon by Dogen Zenji, the founder of the Soto Zen school. Later, in 1521 CE (Oei 1), Hojo Ujitsune invited the monk Yozetsu So-boku to serve as the founding abbot.
