Denshoji Temple
奈良市小川町24
A Ritsu sect temple located in Nara City, Nara Prefecture, enshrining Shakyamuni Buddha as its principal image. It is also renowned for its 'Falling Camellias,' one of the three famous camellia varieties in Nara.
History
Traditionally founded in 771 CE (Hoki 2) by the preceptor Shitaku, it was originally named Jitsuenji. In 1585 CE (Tensho 13), Hoshi Shu-ei, the mother of Tsutsui Shunkei, obtained imperial permission from Emperor Go-Yozei to invite Elder Senzo from Toji Temple, renaming the temple Denshoji and re-establishing it. Since then, it has served as the family temple of the Tsutsui clan.

What visitors say
The temple grounds include a kindergarten, creating an environment where children are watched over. A highlight is a rare Jizo Bodhisattva statue dressed in an actual cloth kimono, which is usually kept in a storage room for viewing. The 'Falling Camellias' are also famous. Goshuin (shrine or temple calligraphic seal stamps) are typically available as pre-written copies, but may be specially hand-written during specific ritual periods.
