明治3年、鍋島直大が戊辰戦争で戦死した藩士78柱を祀ったことに始まる。明治8年に招魂社となり、昭和14年に内務大臣指定の佐賀縣護國神社に改称された。第二次世界大戦後は肥前神社と称していたが、昭和27年に元の名称に復した。
