In the early Edo period, it was designated as one of the Kanto Juhachi Danrin. It became a Chokuganjo (a temple receiving imperial patronage) under Emperor Meiji. However, it lost many of its buildings due to the Haibutsu Kishaku (the anti-Buddhist movement) and other factors. It also lost its economic foundation due to the post-war agricultural land reform. Nevertheless, reconstruction efforts have been advanced through the dedicated efforts of successive abbots.
