Motononokuchi Shrine

Located in Aburayotsu, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, this shrine enshrined Ukanomitama-no-Kami and Isotatsu-no-Mikoto. It is a relatively new shrine established in 1955 CE (Showa 30) after a white fox appeared at the bedside of local fishing boat owner Okamura Saei and commanded, 'Enshrine me here.' The shrine is famous for its spectacular view of 123 vermilion torii gates stretching over 100 meters from a cliff facing the Sea of Japan toward the Ryugu no Shiofuki (sea erosion cave). These torii gates were donated over a ten-year period starting in 1987 CE (Showa 62). Since being selected by CNN as one of 'Japan's 31 Most Beautiful Places' in 2015, the number of foreign tourists has surged. The offering box located at the top center of the main torii gate (approximately 5 meters high), known as 'the hardest in Japan to throw into,' is said to grant wishes if coins are successfully tossed in.

Legend states that the shrine was founded following a divine message from a white fox. It is renowned for the stunning scenery of 123 vermilion torii gates lined up against the backdrop of the Sea of Japan. A distinctive feature is the offering box located at the top of the tall main torii gate.

The spectacular view of 123 red torii gates leading toward the sea is popular for its beautiful contrast with the blue ocean. Visitors enjoy the experience of throwing coins into the high offering box, and there are unmanned sales points for Goshuin (shrine seals) and Omamori (amulets). As there are narrow paths and steep stairs, wearing comfortable walking shoes is recommended for worship.
