The shrine's origins date back to 1769 (Meiwa 6), when Kuroda Tsugutaka, the sixth lord of the Fukuoka Domain, established a small shrine within Fukuoka Castle to enshrine Nagamasa and Kyoutaka. In 1871 (Meiji 4), a new hall was built on the site of the former Koashi Kichouin temple. In 1909 (Meiji 42), the shrine was relocated to its current location in Nishi Park. Although it was completely destroyed during the Great Fukuoka Air Raid in 1945 (Showa 20), it was rebuilt using concrete in 1966 (Showa 41).
