Yashiro-gu Shrine

八代市松江城町7−34

4.2(311)

Located in Yashiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, this shrine is affectionately known locally as "Shogun-san." Its principal enshrined deity (kami) is Prince Kaira, with Prince Yasunari enshrined as a subsidiary deity.

History

Following the post-Meiji Restoration movement to establish shrines honoring the meritorious figures of the Southern Court, the Taishoguan (Grand Council of State) ordered the Kumamoto Prefecture to found this shrine in 1880. It was constructed on the site of the former Yashiro Castle, and the settlement festival (Chinza-sai) was held in 1884. It is one of the Fifteen Shrines of the Kenmu Restoration.

What visitors say

Situated next to the city hall office, this shrine is surrounded by the moat of the castle ruins, creating a quiet environment. The fresh greenery is beautiful, and the atmosphere is remarkably calm, unlike what one might expect in an urban setting. Goshuin (shrine seal stamps) are available, as well as cat omikuji (fortune slips). It is convenient to use the Yashiro Castle Ruins Park parking lot. Please note that the sidewalk from the city hall side has some sections with old paving.
