Yasaka Shrine

Yasaka Shrine is located in Gion-machi Kita-cho, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. It is one of the shrines included in the Nijussha (Lower Eight Shrines). Its former official rank was Kanpei Taisha (Grand Shrine under Imperial Patronage), and it is currently listed as a Hyakutai Jinja (Special Shrine) under the Association of Shinto Shrines. The shrine claims to be the head shrine (So-honsha) for all Yasaka Shrines nationwide and related shrines enshrining Susanoo-no-Mikoto (approximately 2,300 shrines). It is commonly referred to as Gion-san or Yasaka-san. It is also well known as the organizer of the Gion Matsuri (Gion Festival).
