History

It is recorded that Oda Haruhisa restored the shrine buildings in 1333 CE (Genkō 3). During the Eikyō period, the shrine was relocated to its current site and enshrined as Ushitora Tenno Shrine (Shrine of the Ox-Head Heavenly King). In the Edo period, it received deep reverence from the Tsuchiya clan as the guardian shrine of Tsuchiura Castle, and the current main hall (honden) was constructed in 1700 CE (Genroku 13). In 1868 CE (Meiji 1), it became the guardian shrine of Tsuchiura Town, and in 1913 CE (Taishō 2), Haguro Shrine was merged into it.

What visitors say

The approach path is lined with large trees, particularly the zelkova tree in front of the worship hall (haiden) which is very impressive. There is a parking lot for about 10 cars located in the middle of the approach path, just past the torii gate. The shrine is characterized by its charming scenery, including the dragon carving on the offering box and the zelkova trees within the grounds. Goshuin (shrine calligraphic seal stamps) can be received at the administrative office.
