Hachiman Okami, Empress Jingu

History

The shrine originated from 'Hikune no Yashiro Hachiman-gū' (Hachiman Grand Shrine of the Hikune Society), established during Emperor Ōjin's imperial tour. It was renamed 'Himure no Yashiro' (Himure Society) during the reign of Empress Jitō. In the first year of the Kanpyō era (869 CE), the spirit of the Okutsushima Shrine was transferred here, and it was designated as a shrine with three societies, two deities, and nine locations. It was classified as a Gōsha (Village Shrine) in the Meiji era and a Kensha (Prefectural Shrine) in the Taishō era. In 1966 CE (Shōwa 41), it was added to the list of special shrines under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
