History
Founded in 1196 CE (Kenkyu 7) when Oo Yoshinao entered Bungo Province and enshrined a kami from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. Originally located at Ryugao, the shrine was relocated to its current site after the eruption of Mount Tsurumi caused the ground to collapse. The shrine buildings were rebuilt during the Edo period. In the Meiji era, it became the head shrine for Beppu and Hamawaki. It is currently listed as a special shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines.
