The shrine's origins are said to date back to the Enryaku era, when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro prayed for victory at Suwa Grand Shrine while pacifying the Eastern Barbarians. In 1051 CE (Kōhei 4), the father and son, Minamoto no Yoriyoshi and Yoshitaka, sent an envoy to offer sacrifices for a battle. Upon receiving the divine oracle of the Great Deities of both shrines, they enshrined Hachiman shrines in the eight directions of this area. In 1662 CE (Kanbun 2), Date Munekatsu relocated the shrine to its current location. In 1694 CE (Genroku 7), Tamura Shrine was enshrined here as the Aidon (secondary enshrinement).
