The shrine is said to have been founded in 597 CE (Sui 5). It is also mentioned in the Nihon Sōkoku Fudoki (Comprehensive Provincial Records of Japan). During the Heian period, it was rebuilt by Minamoto no Yoshitane. In the medieval period, it was revered by military leaders such as the Imagawa, Takeda, and Tokugawa clans. In the Edo period, it was repaired by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, but it was destroyed by fire in the 1945 Shizuoka air raid.
