The deity was enshrined during the Daian era of the Heian period and was protected by Iwaki Hangan, the Hei Masaka clan. Due to a great tsunami around the Tenbun era, the shrine was relocated to the top of Takijiri Mountain. In 1634, during the Edo period, it was designated as a prayer shrine for the Iizumi Domain. In 1675, it was moved to its current location, the site of the former Hangan Residence. In 1873, the deities of Suwa and Hachiman were merged and enshrined together.
