The shrine was founded in 1092 CE (Kanchi 6) when Shura Saburo Yoshimitsu enshrined deities from Usa Hachiman Jingu (Usa Hachiman Grand Shrine) to protect his family and estate. It was initially called Asahi Hachiman Jingu. Worship continued under the stewardship of Yamamoto Han'kan Yoshisada, the Akechi clan, and the Asai clan. The shrine also received land donations from Hachijō Hideyoshi. In 1876 CE (Meiji 9), it was designated as a village shrine and renamed Hachiman Shrine.
