The shrine was founded in 1092 CE (Kanchi 6) when Saito Sanjo Yoshimitsu enshrined deities from Usa Hachiman Jingu (Usa Hachiman Grand Shrine) to protect his estate. It was initially called Asahi Hachiman Jingu. Worship continued under the patronage of the Yamamoto Genji, the Achi clan, and the Azai clan. The shrine later received donations of its domain from Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1876 CE (Meiji 9), it was designated as a village shrine and renamed Hachiman Shrine.
