According to shrine tradition, Empress Jingō sent Takeda Sukune to Mutsu Province, where he received the divine spirits of the three Sumiyoshi deities and built a small shrine, marking the founding of this shrine. In the autumn of 1995 (Heisei 7), the shrine was relocated and reconstructed at its current location, where it serves as the local tutelary deity (Ujigami) for the Onakano and Ekō districts and is also associated with the Ohamairi festival.
