Traditionally founded in 704 CE (Keiun 1) as Keiun-ji. In 822 CE, the monk Mitsuen relocated it to its current location and established it as Muryouju-ji of the Shingon school. In 1812 CE, it was rebuilt by Yahashi-bai Chao, and the Takinomi Garden was completed at the same time.
