History
The shrine originates from the Hachikoji Gongen faith, which existed under the system of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism (Shinbutsu-shugo). It is said that in 913 CE, while the monk Kegon Bosatsu Myoko was practicing asceticism on Mount Fukazawa, the Ox-Head Heavenly King and eight princes appeared. Following this event, the Hachikoji Gongen was enshrined in 916 CE. During the Meiji-era separation of Shinto and Buddhism, the enshrined deities were changed to the five sons and three daughters who were born from the vow between Susanoo and Amaterasu Omikami.
