History

In ancient times, to improve efficiency when provincial governors visited shrines within their jurisdiction, a Sosha (head shrine) was established near the provincial capital to enshrine multiple deities together. This shrine is identified as that head shrine for the province of Shimosa. According to shrine tradition, it was founded by imperial decree of Emperor Keiko, the 12th emperor. In 1886, the shrine was relocated to its current site due to the construction of an army training ground.
