The temple was founded by Enshu-in-dono Myoken Nichi-e Otane, the second wife of Naizane, the Aki-no-kami of the Nagai clan, during the Hōei era. It was relocated to its current site due to urban redevelopment following the Great Kanto Earthquake and became one of the Fukagawa Seven Lucky Gods when they were revived in 1979 (Showa 54).
