崇峻天皇の皇子である蜂子皇子が、霊烏の導きで羽黒山に登り、苦行の末に羽黒権現を拝し、月山・湯殿山も開いて三山の神を祀ったことに始まると伝えられる。古来より修験道の道場として崇敬され、神仏習合や八宗兼学の山とされてきた。近代以降に「出羽三山」という総称が使われるようになった。
