According to shrine tradition, in 1445 (Buan 2), Kawano Kagemori Masamichi, the lord of Kameda District, built a residence in Hakodate and enshrined the deity Hachiman in its southeastern corner. The shrine was subsequently relocated several times before moving to its current location in Yanagidatamachi in 1880 (Meiji 13). It was elevated to the status of Kokhei Chusha (a medium-sized shrine receiving imperial offerings) in 1896 (Meiji 29).
