Serving as the guardian shrine of Maehara Shinden, it is said to have been founded in 1676 (Enpo 4). Its origins trace back to when Kamito-no Shinnosuke enshrined a statue of Zao Gongen, which he had purchased in Edo in 1715, as the object of worship. During the early Meiji period, following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism, the shrine changed its name from the previous Zao Gongen to its current name.
