Kozanji
下関市長府川端1丁目2−3
A Soto sect temple that serves as the ancestral temple for the Nagashima Mori clan and houses a Zen-style Buddhist hall from the Kamakura period designated as a National Treasure.
History
Founded in 1327 CE (Kareki 2) as the Rinzai sect temple Chofukuji, with Kuan Genjaku as the founding monk. It later became an imperial temple under the patronage of Emperor Go-Daigo, received protection from the Ouchi clan, and was revived by Mori Hidemoto. In 1650 CE (Keian 3), it was renamed Kozanji. The site is also known as the place where Takasugi Shinsaku launched his uprising during the late Edo period.

What visitors say
Known as a famous spot for autumn leaves, the temple is best enjoyed for its vividly colored foliage and the scenery of sunlight streaming through the stairs. Exhibits that evoke a sense of history, such as a statue of Takasugi Shinsaku, are available, and a historical museum and cemetery are located nearby. While the dedicated parking lot is small, paid parking is available in the vicinity. Visitors should be cautious of the narrow surrounding roads.
