According to tradition, the shrine's origins date back approximately 1,800 years, when Empress Jingū stopped at Ashihara-no-Tsu (Ōkawa Enotsu) in Chikugo Province on her return from the conquest of the Three Han kingdoms. At that time, the Azumi clan member Isonomaru enshrined the deity Shōdomei. The Azumi clan has presided over the rituals for generations. The current main hall was rebuilt by Kamimura Masamori during the Sengoku period. Both the main hall and the stone five-story pagoda are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
