The shrine's origins are said to trace back to the time when Amatsuyama no Mikoto completed his divine task of developing the land of Echigo and departed to the realm of the gods, after which he was buried at Mt. Yahiko (also known as the peak of the Divine Sword). It is recorded that his first successor, Amatsudane no Mikoto, built a mausoleum shrine (byousha) to enshrine him. Additionally, it is said that during the reign of Emperor Suinin, Takatsumi no Mikoto received an imperial decree to construct the shrine buildings. Amatsuyama no Mikoto has been revered as the ancestral deity of the development of Echigo Province and was also highly respected by warriors.
