Katsube Shrine
守山市勝部1丁目8−8
Located in Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture, this shrine has a long history as the head shrine of the Monobe district. It is known for its main hall, designated as an Important Cultural Property, and the 'Taimatsu-sai' (Torch Festival), one of Shiga Prefecture's three major fire festivals.
History
The shrine's origin is said to date back to 649 CE (Taika 5), when the local lord, Monobe no Sukune Hirokuni, enshrined the ancestral deity as the head shrine of the Monobe district. In 851 CE (Ninju 1), it was granted the rank of Senior Sixth Rank, Upper Grade, and in 857 CE (Gankei 1), it was elevated to Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade. During the Muromachi period, devotion to the enshrined deity, a war god, grew strong, and the main hall was rebuilt under the deep patronage of the Rokkaku clan. Until the Edo period, it was known as Monobe Shrine and other names, but it was renamed Katsube Shrine in the Meiji era.

What visitors say
The shrine grounds are expansive, and the fire festival is renowned for its dramatic intensity. Goshuin (shrine calligraphic seal stamps) are handwritten directly by the staff at the administrative office. The parking lot is located at the back of the grounds, but it gets crowded during New Year's and festival days, so it is convenient to use nearby paid parking lots.
