Kita Odō: Statue of Rigen Daisō
大阪市中央区本町4丁目1−3
A temple of the Jōdo Shinshū Honganji-ha sect, commonly known as Kita Odō (North Hall). It is a branch temple of Nishi Hongan-ji, and its principal image is Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Buddha).
History
A meeting hall was established in 1592 CE (Tenshō 20), and the main hall was built in 1605 CE (Keichō 10). During the Edo period, it served as the residence for Korean diplomatic envoys. In the Meiji period, it was used as a temporary residence for Emperor Meiji and as the site of the Osaka Prefectural Hospital. The temple was completely destroyed by fire during the 1945 Osaka air raids but was subsequently rebuilt.
