History
In 1864, the Edo shogunate established the shrine by transferring Tōshō Daigongen from Tōjū-in in Samani to Uyakura-mura, which is located in the Kimon (northeast) direction of Goryōkaku Fort. During the Battle of Hakodate, the Gongen battery became a battlefield and the shrine buildings were burned down. The shrine then moved to various locations within Hakodate City before relocating to its current site in 1992. As one of the Ezo San-kanji (Three Great Temples of Ezo), it was once known as the 'Ezo Nikkō' and attracted many devotees.
