Hokkaido Jingu (Hokkaido Grand Shrine)

Located in Chuo-ku, Sapporo City, this shrine serves as the head shrine of Hokkaido and is revered as the guardian deity of the region's development. The enshrined deities are the Three Deities of Development (Okuninushi-no-Kami, Oonamuchi-no-Kami, and Sukuna-Hikona-no-Kami) and Emperor Meiji. In 1869 CE (Meiji 2), following an imperial decree that renamed Ezo to 'Hokkaido,' the Three Deities of Development were enshrined in Tokyo as guardians of the new territory. In 1871 CE (Meiji 4), they were moved to the current site, and the shrine was named 'Sapporo Jinja.' In 1964 CE (Showa 39), Emperor Meiji was added as an enshrined deity, and the shrine was renamed 'Hokkaido Jingu,' its current name. It has been designated as 'Ezoku Shin-Ichinomiya' (New Head Shrine of the Province of Ezo) by the National Ichinomiya Association. The grounds cover approximately 180,000 square meters and adjoin Maruyama Park, making it a famous spot for cherry blossoms, plum blossoms, and Ezo mountain cherries.

History

There is a Rokkatei shop within the precincts where you can purchase souvenirs or take a break. Since Goshuin (calligraphic seal stamps) are available only during early daytime hours, it is recommended to visit early. The adjacent Maruyama Park is also suitable for leisurely strolls.
