The temple was founded during the Heian period by Kobo Daishi (Kukai). When Kukai visited the area, he received a spiritual revelation from Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), carved a statue of the deity himself, and established a hall to house it, which marks the temple's origin. In 1596, the temple changed its affiliation from the Shingon sect to the Soto Zen sect.
