History
Legend holds that in 724 CE (Shinmi 1), fishermen hauled up an Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva statue in their nets. It is said that Kukai consecrated the statue during the Koun era (810-824 CE). The temple flourished from the Kamakura period onward under the patronage of the Kaimura clan. In 1591 CE (Tensho 19), Tokugawa Ieyasu granted it a vermilion seal (shuin). Although many halls were destroyed by air raids in 1945 CE (Shōwa 20), a five-story pagoda was erected in 2009.
