Chitsu-shima Kannon-do (Chitsu-shima Kannon Hall)

南足柄市千津島9番地

👶 Children & safe birth🏥 Health

This temple is beloved as a Kannon (Avalokiteshvara) deity for safe childbirth and child-rearing, and has long been a focus of faith for many people in the Ashigara Plain area.

History

It is said that before the Heian period, the ancestor of the village head (namiushi) of Chitsu-shima, Seto Eimon, built this temple to pray for the memorial rites of his wife and children, who died in difficult labor, and for the safe childbirth of others. In 1594 CE (Bunroku 3), the Kannon Hall was constructed by the village head Seto Buneimon and came to be known as the "Bamboo Skin Kannon." The current building was repaired and rebuilt in 1891 CE (Meiji 24).
