Founded in 1371 by Okuyama Asato, with Mubun Genzen serving as the founding abbot. Mubun Genzen named the temple Shinkokuzan Hojo Bansu Zenji, modeled after the Tiantai Mountain Hojo Temple in China. Following restoration efforts by Tokugawa Ieyasu and donations by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, it became an independent head temple of the Rinzai-shu Hojo-ji school in 1903.
