According to tradition, the Ebisu So-dojo (general training ground) was founded during the Meio period, centered around Jodo Shinshu followers in Ebisu. In 1657 CE (Meireki 3), the main hall was constructed, and the temple was granted the name Nankaiji. After several reconstructions and repairs from the Meiji to the Shōwa periods, it continues to exist today as a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha (Ogival) sect.
