History
The head temple of the Nanzen-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, it holds the prestigious status of 'Above the Five Mountains,' ranking above the Kyoto Gozan and Kamakura Gozan. It is renowned for its massive Sanmon (three gates) and Suirokaku (aqueduct).
