In 1913 CE (Taishō 2), Kashima Shrine, Suwa Shrine, and various other shrines were merged and renamed Furukawa Shrine. Kashima Shrine was an ancient shrine established in the early Heian period by inviting a sub-enshrinement (bunrei) from Kashima Jingu (Kashima Grand Shrine) in Hitachi Province. It was relocated to its current site in 1914 CE (Taishō 3). During the Meiji era, it was designated as a Village Shrine (Mura-ya) and a Koshin-sha (a shrine that supplied offerings to the imperial court).
