The shrine was built on the site where Okikibitsu-hiko-no-Mikoto resided after pacifying the Kibi Province, and it has long been revered as the head shrine of Honshu and the Kibi region. During the reign of Emperor Ninmyo, it was granted the highest divine rank of Ippin. Repairs were carried out under imperial decree throughout history. Although the shrine was destroyed by fire in 1930 (Showa 5), it was rebuilt in 1936 (Showa 11) with architecture that embodies the essence of the Asuka period.
